It is the town of maritime affairs and sailors.
Perast developed owing to activity of sailors and shipbuilding. The rich experience and excellent knowledge brought it European fame.
Many people from Perast had a high position in the fleets of some other countries.
At the end of 17th century the Rusian tzar Peter the Great himself sent a number of noblemen in Perast to be taught in nauticism.
Cadets were high born. Ten princes and seven "bojars". One tzar's relative. One count- Tolstoj.
The great Marko Martinovich taught them.
The Martinovich's building "nautica" was pulled down. Only the picture of the great sailor and his noble students shows the high
European level of nautical knowledge in Perast.
